Rap group Public Enemy's iconic track "Fight the Power" has topped a poll of the 100 Greatest hip-hop songs in history.

The 1989 track, the video for which was directed by Spike Lee, took top spot on the new list compiled by music channel VH1.

"Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang scored second place on the list, with Dr. Dre's "Nuthin But A 'G' Thang" coming in at number three.

The poll's top five definitive hip-hop songs was rounded out by Run-DMC's Walk This Way collaboration with Aerosmith and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's "The Message."

The complete 100 track countdown will be aired on VH1 next month in preparation for the channel's annual Hip-Hop Honors show on October 6.
